Greek Finance

By Gabe
At first people traded for goods, money wasn't invented until the 7th century. The first coins were made in Lydia out of a mixture of gold in silver. At the time this was called electrum. the coins reached the Greek colonies and soon after the mainland. at first, Greek coins were just lumps of electrum. after a little while people started to prefer solid gold or silver coins. For mostly all of their coins the Greeks used silver and formed them in a round flat shape like the coins we use today! when cities started making their own coins it showed a sign of independence.

In Athens the currency they used was the Drachma. Usually you had to trade in the coins you had for the local currency, but you can pay with a drachma anywhere. At first one Drachma was six Oboli sticks (metal sticks).
